Woke up with a song in my head.
It wasn’t mine, wasn’t a dream I had
Woke up with a song in my head:
Is it my fault that that song is bad?
Crafted for repeatability,
Pumped up media reality.
Woke up with a song in my head.
It wasn’t mine, wasn’t a dream I had
Woke up with a song in my head:
“OMG! This shit is rad!”
Mindless repeatability,
Welcome media reality,
Magical pop sensibility,
And rhymes and rhymes and rhymes…
a million dollar payload
image made and hollow
you get it, or you’re slow
just doing what you’re told
it’s so close, so dear
desire burning in your ear
catch it, hold it near
muzzle your fear
it’s better if you don’t think
you listen but you won’t blink
making it the missing link
wash your cares down the sink
the choices seem clear:
ironic or sincere,
bionic or in tears
iconic or… Right. Here.
Well, I won’t be manipulated by your
fashion statement
I won’t be lulled to sleep with
commercial containment
I won’t forget the Earth and its
blue-like raiment
I won’t forget justice for
sales and placement
Woke up with a song in my head.
Flash in the pan, lightning red.
Woke up with a song in my head –
Is my fault? Is my fault?
Crafted for repeatability,
Pumped up media reality.
Magical pop sensibility,
And rhymes and rhymes and rhymes…
Woke up with a song in my head.
It wasn’t mine, wasn’t a dream I had
Woke up with a song in my head –
I went on with the day instead.

Talkin' to the Police
03:35
|
|||
I walked up to the bank, the police standing there since dawn.
I walked up to the bank, the police standing there since dawn.
I said, I’m not here for a rob’ry, but, you know, there’s one goin’ on
I marched to the coal mine from the town on the hill.
I marched to the coal mine from the town on the hill.
The air went from clean to sooty and people’s eyes were red as hell.
So I sidle up to the gate keeper with his security team on call.
So I sidle up to the gate keeper with his security team on call.
I said, I know you need a new job so you can stand up tall.
There’s no justice in protecting the rich from the poor.
There’s no justice in protecting the rich from the poor.
‘Cause the laws being broken won’t protect them no more.
You might not see it on the T.V. but we’re not waiting at the door.
You might not see it on the T.V. but we’re not waiting at the door.
You might think you have us beaten but you're not going to win this class war.

Doublethink (U.S.A.)
04:29
|
|||
I was reading George Orwell,
The day that the Twin Towers fell
Reading ‘bout the minutes of hate,
Watching the networks consolidate,
Till they got their message straight,
Stamped and approved by the State.
(They said) “Security”
And it’s scaring me.
Didn’t finish the book, I’ve read it before:
Ignorance is strength and peace is war.
It’s doublethink.
Doublethink.
Fear spread by dramatization.
Manipulating the public’s attention.
Then they send soldiers to Afghanistan,
Talking like they did in Vietnam:
“We’re bringing freedom to the land,
We’ll deliver democracy in a can.”
Now, it’s policy
And it’s scaring me.
I don’t buy it, I’ve heard it before,
Hearts and minds don’t open with force,
It’s doublethink.
Doublethink.
Cheerleading keeps us believing.
Cheerleading a team we believe in.
See, America started with genocide,
And got rich whipping slavery’s hide.
We keep trying to escape our history,
Obfuscating violence with ideology,
But what controls the military?
It isn’t people but capital greed.
That’s reality,
And it’s scaring me.
I must look, but I don’t want it no more:
A corporate agenda, perpetual war.
No more doublethink,
Don’t you think?
No more doublethink,
Don’t you think?

Lullabye (for democracy)
02:30
|
|||
They sleep fine at night,
The doors are locked up tight;
Their off-shore account
And contribution amount
Protected inside the great divide,
But the division is not,
It’s not what you thought.
It’s never complete
Till you’re asleep.

A genre-bending tilt that contains some heavy messages about contemporary society.
The lyrics were influenced by Chris Hedges' writing, particularly 'The Death of the Liberal Class' and 'Wages of Rebellion'.

Leaving Rock'n Roll
03:43
|
|||
A hard-working sun casts down on a muddy bank
Heat ripples rising, slow men burning
A guitar breaks out angry and sad
The spirit moans of sweat learning fast
That it’s easier to give away than take the toys
And leave rock’n roll to the poor boys
A mansion on a hill finished counting time
In the valley below it’s all rotted siding, chicken wire
A radio calls out a fast-picking tune
Uplifting a day grown tired at noon
But even folks in the trailer park have toys
And leave rock’n roll to the poor boys
Ten blocks from the harbour, museum and shops
Community fractured by cracked city blocks
And not even a boom box declares the hard truth
Or erases the luxury vehicle proof
Cause all the rebels can be bought with toys
And leave rock’n roll to the poor boys
Wednesday night scene in a quaint little town
Catalog-picked mansions’n big box stores surround
A band on stage at the local bar
Makes a quip how original their four songs are
And thank their dads who bought them all the toys
So they won’t leave rock’n roll to the poor boys
Cause all the rebels have been bought with toys
And leave rock’n roll –

A Portrait
03:14
|
|||
I’m indisposed to frivolity,
cantankerous in the face of fun,
but I’m not old, how dare you
say such a thing, son.
I’ll speak my mind if I feel it,
but my heart stays in its place,
‘cause I keep my sleeve free for wiping
the dirt from my face.
There’s a light I see
That no one else sees;
There’s a dam I built
That will never crack;
There’s a pass through the mountains
That I’ve never walked
But if I go, there’s no way back.
You don’t think I care for your problems
and the struggles I put you through,
but I cannot speak beyond the dotted lines
cannot paint red with blue.

The Great Until
04:16
|
|||
It used to be a green field,
There used to be a hill;
It was an unmarked landscape
Before the great until.
It started with schematics,
Just some crazy ol’ plan,
But then you got the dynamite
And restructured the land.
You leveled the grassy hill,
You built tunnels and walls
To distract you from the outside
And silence the haunting calls.
But you forgot…
You forgot it’s all around you;
You forgot that it creeps in –
So focused on those angels
dancing on the head of a pin.
When the blossom opens,
When the stars come out,
When the rain falls on the farm land
After a long drought;
When the grapes ripen,
When the moon is full,
When the last cart load
Of harvest is pulled…
You realize it had you fooled.
It’s not what you expected but it crept right in,
Taken for granted everywhere you’ve ever been.
Never put to the test,
Although you did your best,
It’s not what you expected but it crept right in,
It still outlasts those angels
dancing on the head of a pin.
Love is a green field
With a big ol’ hill,
Love is the landscape,
The great until.

In the evening
04:31
|
|||
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing near,
Singing words of wisdom
But I can’t hear
Is it really ‘Let it be’,
And will it be alright?
Or, is it “Get up, stand up
Don’t give up the fight”?
And I can see her mouth move,
As my teeth grind:
Does she speak compassion?
Are those words kind?
Or is it Kalì
And divine destruction?
Finality of worlds,
Apocalyptic unction?
In the evening,
I just keep listening.
In the evening,
I just keep dreaming.
